(NL) In deze eerste aflevering van 'The Academic Pride Podcast' onderzoeken presentator Camille Kwendé, dr. Looi van Kessel (universitair docent Literatuurwetenschap en Gender Studies en voormalig voorzitter van het LGBT+-netwerk) en universiteitshistoricus dr. Pieter Slaman of er in de 450-jarige geschiedenis van de Universiteit Leiden ruimte is geweest om jezelf te zijn. Aan de hand van de geschiedenis van de Leidse Pride-boot en het idee van academische vrijheid verkennen ze de spanning tussen idealen en de weerbarstige praktijk. Een gesprek over identiteit, inclusie en de vraag wie er in de loop der eeuwen wél en niet zichzelf kon zijn.

(ENG) In this first episode of The Academic Pride Podcast, host Camille Kwendé, Dr. Looi van Kessel (Assistant Professor of Literary Studies and Gender Studies and former chair of the LGBT+ network), and university historian Dr. Pieter Slaman explore whether, throughout Leiden University’s 450-year history, there has been room to be yourself. Drawing on the history of the Leiden Pride boat and the idea of academic freedom, they examine the tension between ideals and the realities of practice. A conversation about identity, inclusion, and the question of who, over the centuries, has - and has not - been able to be themselves.
