Sandra Birchmore’s Phone Captured WHAT at 9:40?!

At 9:40 p.m. on February 1, 2021, Sandra Birchmore’s phone counted eight steps, prosecutors say. At 9:43 p.m., Matthew Farwell was seen exiting her apartment building. The government presents that timing in its case against the former Stoughton detective, accused of killing Sandra and causing the death of her unborn son. 

Farwell has pleaded not guilty. His defense says Sandra died by suicide. Federal prosecutors argue the scene was staged after her death. The competing accounts turn on physical evidence, expert interpretations of injuries, building footage and the meaning of digital records. Jennifer Coffindaffer joins Tony Brueski to examine the limitations as well as the significance of the phone data. 

Beyond the final minutes, Sandra’s earlier involvement in the Stoughton Police youth program has prompted questions about the department itself. An internal investigation identified misconduct involving Matthew Farwell, William Farwell and Robert Devine. The former deputy chief later lost his law-enforcement certification after regulators found he had been untruthful and had contacted Sandra through a Facebook alias, “Marty Riggs.” Devine disputes the findings. William Farwell and Devine have not been charged in Sandra’s death.
 
The distinction matters. Findings of police misconduct are serious but do not decide who caused Sandra’s death. The federal case requires a jury to assess the specific allegations against Matthew Farwell. Coffindaffer and Brueski connect the investigative history with the prosecution’s motive theory while giving the defense account its proper place. Sandra’s family has spent years seeking answers; the jury must decide which version is supported by proof.
