Why Did Matthew Farwell’s Lawyers Call the FBI’s Own Bone Expert?
04 nov 2026 · 00:16:22
Matthew Farwell’s defense called Dr. Angi Christensen on November 3rd, the forensic anthropologist the FBI asked to examine Sandra Birchmore’s broken hyoid. The answer to why sits in two of her sentences: there is no established force that breaks that bone, and hangings have broken it in children as young as two. What the prosecution got from her is the rest of the day. On cross she agreed Sandra’s bone hadn’t fused, that an unfused hyoid is harder to break, and that strangulation is the most common cause of a fracture like it. The day opened with a defense DNA expert who said the strap around Sandra’s neck went into a plastic bag crumpled in a ball and that the state lab’s four-person mixture should never have been interpreted. Prosecutors answered with the lab’s accreditation and the math. Farwell has to decide by November 4th whether he testifies.
