#270 ENGLISH - Peter van Agtmael on war, identity, photography and starting again

De Donkere Kamer | 26 mei 2026 | 01:11:22

Peter van Agtmael built his career photographing America at war, both abroad and at home. From Iraq and Afghanistan to the long aftermath of 9/11, his work explores themes like conflict, nationalism, identity, race and power.

In this conversation, we talk about leaving the US behind, becoming a father, the collapse of traditional photojournalism, and the creative wall that pushed him toward painting and other forms of image-making.

What stayed with me most was his honesty about change. About allowing yourself to evolve creatively instead of repeating what already works.

A personal and layered conversation with one of the most important photographic voices of his generation.

And if conversations like these resonate with you: every month, we host live online masterclasses with internationally acclaimed photographers, curators and visual storytellers. You can join live, ask your own questions, or watch the replay afterwards.
